William Houser of St. Marys, West Virginia, has been awarded a $10,000 per year scholarship for a total of $40,000 over four years to 51ºÚÁÏÍø after participating in Senator Leadership & Scholarship Day in December. Houser, a student at St. Marys High School, was selected from a group of the 55 highest achieving high school seniors who are among hundreds of students accepted to attend 51ºÚÁÏÍø this fall.
Houser is the son of Arnold and Gina Houser of St. Marys. At St. Marys High School, he is a member of the wrestling, cross country and track teams, as well as 4-H, LEO Club and Stars Club.
At 51ºÚÁÏÍø, Houser plans to major in education.
To be eligible to compete for a Leadership Scholarship, students must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Students were also required to submit a list of outstanding leadership honors or awards they have received and describe three skills that have strengthened them as a leader. Students vying for the scholarships participated in interviews and submitted an essay of no more than 500 words consisting of a personal statement outlining their interests, life experiences, goals and commitment to leadership.
